About We Think Pink 365

We Think Pink 365 began after we discovered that our third pregnancy was going to be a girl. After already having 5 and 6 year old daughters, the title seemed to fit perfectly. Everything in our house revolves around make up and fashion. Dressing up and changing clothes 20x a day is nothing out of the ordinary. With that said, we do know how to get down and dirty. You may very well find us exploring at Lake Erie or one of the Metroparks, but even when we play in the mud we're wearing a tutu and glitter shoes! I have left the classroom to become a Stay at Home Mom (SAHM). We are expecting in October and are set up for breastfeeding, cloth diapering, and babywearing. Breastfeeding and Babywearing are nothing new to me, but I'm expecting cloth diapering to be an experience! Although I left the classroom on an 8-4 daily basis I spend many hours a week volunteering at our daughters school and creating experiences to enhance their individual learning experiences to take them above and beyond state grade level standards. I believe that learning must begin at home and therefore use every opportunity I can as a "teachable" moment. I look forward to sharing the excitement and experiences of a new baby as well as the learning and growing of our elementary aged daughters. Number Reversals (continued)

Number Reversals Treatment Plan-

Well, we had our well visit to the pediatrician and we brought up the issue of number reversals.  In case you haven't read the previous article, "Dyslexia or Vision Problems, Why Does my Daughter Reverse her Numbers."  Our six year old daughter, who is in second grade, is reversing the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9.  Although she has always done it, it was brushed off as something developmental that she would grow out of.  My problem now is that if untreated and still occurring in third grade, research indicates it could be something more severe.  So I discussed with the pediatrician many of the interventions that we had previously implemented and in a few cases are still currently implementing.

Interventions past and present-

Give specific attention to the distinctive features of a letter/number:
• model correct letter/number formation- show your child how to make the number correctly.
• highlight the distinctive features through
verbal cues- using words to describe such as; starting at the top, starting at the dotted lines, right, left, curve, around, back
visual cues-place a letter/number line on students’ desk, homework folder, and even post one in the room and encourage students to check their work- My daughter knows the numbers she struggles with and will look back to the folder as she completes her assignments to ensure accuracy.
kinesthetic cues- standing up, use glow sticks, a princess wand, or even a ribbon to draw the numbers in the air

tactile cues- use shaving cream or create raised number cards
• verbally label the distinctive features
• point out the similarities and differences between letters or numbers and have students note these by: pointing, tracing, coloring, reconstructing
REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT
• provide quick feedback to students to reinforce accurate formation and correct inaccurate formation-Be sure to sit with them while they are work to comment immediately.  It will be less effective to discuss the reversal next week.

Our Plan
We have decided to work with a pediatric occupational therapist on a weekly basis and see if there are any strategies that they are able to come up with that we have not considered, or even if simply working with someone different than mom will help!  I'll be sure to update you in a few months on how things are developing!

Bubble Ride by Vanessa Trien

Bubble Ride by Vanessa Trien- Review

While I have NO musical ability at all, I have read lots of research behind the importance of music in early childhood.  Each of our daughters began to listen to music while still in the womb.   We play various genres and learning CD’s in the car every time we travel.  Despite the fact the girls do not have a television in their room, they each have their own CD player and music collection.

While studying early childhood development in college and continuing to review research now I find that study after study states that, children who are actively involved with music whether they play, listen, or sing it do better in reading and math when they start school. They are better able to focus and control their bodies. They even play better with others and have higher self-esteem.
Quite simply, children need music to fully develop, and these days children have fewer and fewer opportunities for singing in their lives. Sing with your children everyday. Help them build relationships and a love of language. Our family has a new favorite, that the girls keep on repeat! Check it out and take your kids on a….

Bubble Ride is NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE at cdbaby.com!!!
Vanessa Trien and the Jumping Monkeys | Bubble Ride

As of September 14, 2012, the brand new CD, Bubble Ride, can now be purchased at www.cdbaby.com! Just search for "Vanessa Trien" and it will come up. Our personal favorites are track 3- Spinning Around and track 4- Tickle Monster. Both allow for creative expression and movement.  Although, we have a few favorites, the entire CD is wonderful and highly recommended to add to your home or classroom music collection!  My five and six year olds have fallen so in love with the CD that we are even purchasing her former two CD's Carnival Day and Hot Air Balloon as holiday gifts!

Toe Juice Giveaway 9/20-10/4- CLOSED

The Toe Juice Giveaway Hosted by Mommy Lesson Plans

What an intriguing name!  I was so interested to learn what is Toe Juice?  Keep reading and find out what Nancy at Mommy Lesson Plans has discovered.
I live in the desert. Normal footwear for me are sandals and flip flops. As you can imagine, this does a real number on my feet. My heels are in very poor condition six months out of the year. I get such deep cracks that I bleed. I know - gross. But I have to tell you this so that you can understand what Toe Juice has done for me.
The first couple of days, I wondered if this was going to work. I didn't see much of a difference at first. I found out that it was really effective if I applied the Toe Juice after filing my heals. After two weeks, the deep cracks were gone. No more bleeding. My feet still have cracks, but they are superficial. I can tell that if I use the Toe Juice more, I will eventually get rid of all the cracks. I didn't just stop there. I have flaking around my eyebrows. I used the Toe Juice on my eyebrows, and it cleared up quite quickly. Toe Juice is made from Dermavine; which are plant based extracts. It is safe for all ages and races. It is recommended that it be applied twice a day for 10-14 days. The company has deals running regularly and has coupons on its website.
Prize: One Toe Juice Combo Kit
The event dates: 9/20-10/4

This event would not become possible without the participation of these amazing co-hosts: Giveaway Gator , Couponing with Integrity, and Pea of Sweetness.

Marengo Luxury Spa Review

For those of you Cleveland area mother's and mother's to be that are exhausted beyond belief, I have found your new relaxation location. They are ready and waiting to serve you.  I had the pleasure of experiencing Marengo Luxury Spa.  In downtown Cleveland, located between 4th and Euclid Ave., there is the beautiful Arcade and inside is a taste of heaven awaiting your arrival.  This could very well be a step above a luxury spa, even considered to be the ultimate spa indulgence.  I found Marengo Luxury Spa offers a unique combination of luxurious services whereby you can be physically rejuvenated, soothingly pampered and spiritually renewed. I had planned for me a prenatal massage and a pedicure.  Let me tell you more...
My husband dropped me off at The Arcade just before 11 am.
I walked past the lovely man shiny shoes.
Everytime I walk into this building it takes my breath away.  This has to be the best location for a relaxing getaway.  Which is what I was about to receive.

Off the main floor and to the right awaited my destination.

There it was, Marengo Luxury Spa!

I walked into the door and was greeted, they took my name and I was introduced to my new best friend.  For the next fifty minutes, Kimberly was going to make me forget I had even considered being a stay at home mom, with school age kids, could ever be a bad thing!   She guided me back where I could slip out of my jeans and into my robe. Once undressed, she showed me our room and explained the procedures.  Being as though I'm in my third trimester of pregnancy, I would be lying on my back and sides throughout the procedure.  This specialized massage is recommended for the second and third trimester to assist in relieving lower back pain, water retention, sciatica, or just because by this point in your pregnancy your deserve it! When we finished Kimberly had a glass of ice water waiting and an elegant dessert bar that displayed various cookies, trail mixes, and snack bars.  I changed out of my robe and back into my jeans for pamper me session round 2.  With my chocolate cookie on plate, Kathy showed me out to the massage chair for my pedicure.  (Although after the amazing work just performed, who needed a massage chair!)

Everything in the space was elegant and relaxing.  It was truely refreshing to every sense.

A second refreshment bar is in the main area.  I love how everything about Marengo Luxury Spa is taken to the next level of sophistication!

You know the color chosen for the pedicure had to be PINK!

Thank you so much to Monique, Kimberly, and Kathy for the amazing experience.  I believe this will have to be my new baby shower gift!  Truely an experience every expecting mother needs to have.

Spelling Word Study Strategies

Spelling comes easily for some and is a little more difficult for others.  No matter where your child falls in the spectrum, a bag of study strategies is always nice to have handy.  Here is our families bag of tricks.  Find the one the works for you or switch them up!

1. Write each spelling word seven times.  First red, then yellow, orange, green, blue, indigo and violet!  (We usually switch up indigo or violet for PINK)
2. Type all of your spelling words on the computer, you could even email them to grandparents!
3. Use a paintbrush with a bowl of water or water gun to write your words on the sidewalk.
4. Write your words in alphabetical order. Then write them in reverse alphabetical order.
5. Write a story using ALL of your spelling words.
6.  Write a sentence for each spelling word.
7. Use two different color pens to write your spelling words. Use one color to write the consonants and the other for the vowels.
8. Triangles - Write words as if they are a triangle, adding one letter each time.                                w
                                      wo
                                     wor
                                    word

9. Write a spelling word with your pencil. Now trace around the outside with a crayon, hugging the same but not touching the letters. Pick two other crayons to continue tracing outward!
10. When repetitive practice doesn't work for a certain word we head to word mapping.  (Dr. Bruce Murray from Univ. of Auburn explains this great).
W or d / m a p / p i ng

The wordmapping procedure has nine steps. For five steps, the student examines the phonological structure of the word by attending to phonemes (mouth movements), all without seeing the word. For the remaining four steps, the student constructs and studies the spelling as a word map.
First, examine the mouth moves of the spoken word. Example

1. Say the word. night
Say the syllables if there are more than one.

2. Stretch the word. /nnnIIIt/
Work syllable by syllable with multisyllabic words.
If a phoneme can't be stretched, exaggerate it.

3. Segment (split up) the phonemes.
Work by syllables if necessary.
First phoneme? /n/
Next phoneme? etc. /I/
Last phoneme? /t/
Skillful spellers may simply report the segments.

4. Count the phonemes. 3

5. Draw blanks. __ ___ __
The blanks stand for the phonemes.
Put slashes between syllables.

Next, construct a word map to learn the spelling.

6. Record the spelling phoneme by phoneme.
On the first blank, write [letters] n ___ __
On next blank, write [letters] n igh __
On last blank, write [letters] n igh t
If there are silent letters, caret them in.

7. Write the word in your best cursive handwriting.       night

8. Study the spelling.
Ask what a pattern] says OR What does igh say?
Ask about how a phoneme is spelled OR How do we spell /I/ in night?
Ask what we need to remember about the word. What's tricky about night?
Only ask about tricky parts.

9. Give the meaning.
What does ___ mean? When it's dark out.

These are the strategies that work best at my house for my daughters.  Every child has their own learning style.  When I was teaching, I would provide my students with a spelling contract broken down by learning style for them to complete on a weekly basis for practice.  This helps with studying by allowing them to have choices and allowing for differintiation.  (This particular contract is from Learning In Bliss)

Number Recognition or Number Reversal Activity

This weekend we took the time to get in a little number practice.  Oliviana is working with number recognition, specifically having trouble with her 6 and 9 and Jazzalyn still has lots of number reversals 2,3,4,5,6,7, and 9.
Rather than practice with pencil and paper we decided to take it a little more of a tactile direction and get our sense of touch involved.  For this activity we would need two plates, one for each girl, a can of shaving cream, and our jar of numbers

The first thing we did was to put a small about of shaving cream on the plate.  The amount should be about the size of a quarter.

Once the shaving cream is on the plate, you can then pull a number out of the jar.  Look at the number.  Say the number out loud.  Then trace that number into the shaving cream.  Look back at the number inside the cap. Look at the number on the plate.  Do they look the same?  If so, set the number cap aside, wipe through your shaving cream and go again.

Once the girls had a chance to play around for awhile I put in front of them only the numbers they were struggling with and had them practice only those.

Jazzalyn found a paintbrush was also fun writing instrument to use in the shaving cream.  Feel free to use a paintbrush or your finger. Both work great.

Learning can be fun!  Make your childs' education enjoyable!
